The symptoms and signs for children may be even more vague than for adults. Children with sepsis may:

Young children may not want feeds, may repeatedly be sick (vomit) or may not pass any urine and so not have wet nappies.

.

Sepsis is a medical emergency and treatment needs to be started as soon as possible. Always seek urgent medical advice or get straight to hospital if you think you or someone close to you may have sepsis.

The outlook for sepsis can be good if it is diagnosed and treated early. However, without early treatment, between 10 and 50 people out of 100 will die, depending on the severity of sepsis. Older people tend to fare less well, especially if they have a long-term illness like diabetes or heart disease.

Complications can include:

As with any severe illness which needs intensive treatment in hospital, people recovering from sepsis may experience physical and psychological difficulties and these difficulties may last for several years.

Physical problems may include feeling very tired, muscle weakness, feeling short of breath, chest pains, fluid swelling (oedema), joint pains, poor appetite, disturbed vision, skin numbness or pins and needles, and frequent illness caused by further infections.

Psychological difficulties may include feeling anxious, feeling low or depressed, nightmares, poor sleep, poor concentration and problems with memory.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle will reduce your chances of developing infections that can lead to sepsis. Both smoking and alcohol increase the risk.

If you have a condition which qualifies you for flu and pneumonia immunisation jabs (for example, if you have diabetes or asthma) make sure you take up these options. Children need to be up to date with their vaccinations, particularly Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), group C meningococcus, pneumococcus and mumps.

Award-winning poet celebrates students’ work Twitter

By Katie Neitz

Mario Sanchez ’21 is an avid and aspiring writer. But he’s never shared his work publically—let alone into a microphone at a podium before an audience of 60 people, including faculty members and an award-winning slam poet.

Mario Sanchez ’21

As winner of the English department’s Jean Corrie Poetry Prize, Sanchez dismissed his nerves and allowed himself to fall into the rhythm of his piece, “Poem about a Flower, ” at a recent poetry reading and ice cream social to celebrate student poets in Pfenning Alumni Center.

Mario Sanchez ’21 and Ryan Branch ’21

Renowned poet samsax (who spells his name with all lowercase letters) judged the event, which is open to first-, second-, and third-year students, and selected Sanchez’s poem for the top prize and a poem by Ryan Branch ’21 as runner-up.

Ryan Branch ’21

“Writing is usually a private thing to me, and I never really share it,” Sanchez says. “One of the lines from this poem just came to me, and I knew I had to write it down. I didn’t know where it was coming from or where it was going. To have a person like sam sax tell you that he likes your work gives me a lot of hope for my future.”

Sax, winner of The National Poetry Series and the James Laughlin Award from the Academy of American Poets, is an author and two-time Bay Area Grand Slam Champion whose poems have appeared in BuzzFeed, The New York Times , Poetry Magazine , and other journals, read several of his poems, which explore deeply personal aspects and experiences of his life, such as addiction, cancer, love, sex, and loss.

Though the spotlight was on Sanchez and Branch, who recited their winning entries for the crowd, all students were encouraged to take the mic. Five additional students accepted the invite and shared their poetry. Many students stayed to sit with sax, who participated in an open QA and answered questions about his inspiration and process.

The event, which was organized by Assistant Professor of English Megan Fernandes , precedes the College’s H. MacKnight Black Poetry and Literature Prize, which is awarded to a senior. That celebration and reading will occur at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, in room 104 of Kirby Hall of Civil Rights.

Eastern Europe is projected to shrink dramatically over the next few decades. What’s worse, most countries are refusing to consider one solution to slow down the incoming demographic disaster.

The top 10 countries with the fastest shrinking populations are all in Eastern Europe (with a few in Central and Northern Europe), according to UN projections . Bulgaria, Latvia, Moldova, Ukraine, Croatia, Lithuania, Romania, Serbia, Poland, Hungary, are estimated to see their population shrink by 15% or more by 2050.

In Bulgaria, the world’s fastest shrinking country, the population is expected to drop from 7 million in 2017 to 5.4 million in 2050. In Latvia, the population is estimated to drop from 1.9 million in 2017 to 1.5 million, whilst in Moldova, the population is estimated to shrink from 4 million to 3.2 million.

“Many post-communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe are heading for a major demographic decline,” says Tomas Sobotka, a lead researcher at Wittgenstein Centre , which analysis population dynamics. “And, what’s more, many have already experienced massive population declines in the last 25 years,” he adds.

At least 11 countries have shrunk by more than 10% in terms of their population size since 1989, Sobotka says, including, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine. Latvia lost over a quarter of its population (27%), Lithuania 23%, Bulgaria and Bosnia and Herzegovina 21%. For instance, Bulgarian population contracted from 9 million in 1989 to 7.1 million in 2017. “That’s a massive population loss, unprecedented in peace times,” he explains.

Sobotka puts this population loss down to three factors—falling fertility rates, massive out-migration and relatively high mortality. “So whereas Western and southern European countries have attracted a lot of immigration which largely offset the effects of low fertility, the East is in a double bind, experiencing both out-migration and low birth rates,” he says.

In 2016, growth in Europe’s population was largely as a result of immigration (paywall). While the number of births and deaths were equal at 5.1 million each, net migration boosted the population by 1.5 million to 511.8 million. Taking in more migrants might seem like an obvious solution to Eastern Europe demographic time bomb, but the issue remains politically toxic.

In fact, the Mens Burgundy Micromodal Strip Base Layer Lovable Many Styles Clearance 100% Authentic Sale Sast Discount With Paypal 0Iml3
to taking in migrants has come from countries with rapidly depleting populations. In 2015, the European Union (EU) was rocked by a refugee crisis that saw over a million migrants flow into the bloc. The countries that are the main sea gateways to Europe—Greece and Italy—bore the brunt of the crisis. The EU’s attempt to fairly resettle migrants across the bloc has failed; in 2015, the EU pledged to resettle 160,000 migrants, but as of August 2017, only 25,000 were Cupro Skirt Pretty by VIDA VIDA Excellent Online Cheap Sale Outlet Locations Clearance Enjoy Outlet Big Sale Best Seller uJBHWf7
. Slovakia had taken in just 16 migrants, the Czech Republic 12, while Hungary and Poland have refused to take any along. Slovakia and the Czech Republic have also been reluctant to accept migrants from the relocation scheme. Earlier this month (Jan.3), political leaders from Hungary and Poland declared that the EU’s migration policy has failed.
